Snapchat Spectacles: Let’s Look at the Future

By Figaro Digital

So, you’ve heard of Google Glass, but have you seen the Snap Spectacles? Snapchat Inc. has been treating Northern California, US, to its limited edition, brand new technology and the world is going nuts for them!

What’s So Good About These Spectacles?

Sunglasses and Snapchat camera in one, these snazzy new specs allow you to capture your experiences and adventures from your perspective. They’re marketed as a fuss free way of Snapping without the need to interrupt what you’re doing.

The Spectacles are always on and the glasses’ website describes that these glasses work as follows:

• Specs make memories, from your perspective.
• Press the button (on the side of the glasses) to make a 10-second Snap.
• Lights show friends you’re Snapping.
• Wirelessly add your Snaps to Memories on Snapchat.
• Specs charge in their case.

What Could These Do for Marketing?

Snapchat is already used to market products and build momentum behind an event, offer or happening, but these new glasses can give potential customers a real ‘look’. Spectacles broadcast exactly what the wearer sees, giving the feeling that the viewer (despite possibly being on the other side of the world) is right there with them.

And, just like the app, Spectacles use Snap’s beloved stickers – providing marketers will further opportunities to get a brand seen.

How Can You Get Your Hands on Some?

Sadly, you can’t just pop down to your local or pick up a pair on Amazon (though there are pairs selling for thousands of dollars on eBay). Instead, Snap is building demand by only releasing these limited edition glasses in small numbers.

They’re also making buyers work for it. The spectacles are being sold from a vending machine, however no one knows where this is going to be and for how long. This pop-up vending machine was dropped off at Venice Beach, CA, last Thursday and in hours the specs were sold out.

Then, yesterday, the machine appeared in Loma Vista, CA, near the Big Sur, where the spectacles were sold out in mere hours despite the remote location. Some people even drove hours to get there only to be disappointed.

So far they are only available in the US, but we’re sure they’ll go global soon after the success Snap has seen in such a short period of time.
